SIGNIS/WACC tv-festival awards three programmes in Berlin Print E-mail

 TV-programmes from Germany, Ireland and The Netherlands won prizes at the 17th SIGNIS–WACC European Television Festival of Religious Programmes held in Berlin June 2-6.

The first prize was awarded to tv-documentary “Meine Eltern, (My Parents) produced by ARD/Hessischer Rundfunk in Frankfurt-Main, Germany. The programme deals with growing up, age and dignity.

 The 17th European Television Festival of Religious Programmes will be held in Berlin, June 2-6. The festival is organized by SIGNIS (the World Catholic Association for Communication) and WACC-Europe in cooperation with Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF).

Portrait of vanishing Turkey wins two awards at Berlin film festival Print E-mail

 The Ecumenical Jury at the 60th Berlinale awarded its Competition prize to Bal (Honey) directed by Semih Kaplanoglu (Turkey/Germany, 2010). The International Jury also gave the film its coveted Golden Bear.  A splendid portrait of the poet as a young child, Bal tells the story of the blossoming of the sensibility in a rural boy, Yusuf, living in the highlands of northeast Turkey. Immersed in a forest of overwhelming beauty, Yusuf´s life points to a connection with nature that provides not only material subsistence but spiritual learning, highlighting issues such as family love and involvement in the community.   WACC’s Vice-President, Praxedis Bouwman, has reiterated that communication is an essential part of every aspect of a church organisation and must occupy a central position. Praxedis, also a member of the WACC Europe Regional Executive Committee, was addressing some 40 participants at an intense discussion about "what communication is and its position within churches”. The hearing called “Communication as a spider in the web called church” was held at the 13th Assembly of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) organised by WACC Europe, in Lyon France, 15-20 July. WACC Board member in UK interviewed by BBC Print E-mail

 Sara Speicher, a member of the WACC Europe Regional Executive Committee and WACC’s Board of Directors, was among a panel of experts interviewed yesterday by BBC Radio Wales, for a Sunday programme dubbed "All Things Considered".

In the interview, Roy Jenkins, “looks at the digital revolution which we're all living through” in the theme Christianity in the Digital age.

  WACC-Europe has produced the first regional newsletter, Meeting Point, aimed at connecting the European personal and corporate members of WACC. The Regional Chair, Rev Juha Rajamäki, says the newsletter is a tool to inform members about networks, events and resources.

In memoriam Wim Koole (1929-2009) Print E-mail

  Wim Koole, who died on Easter Sunday, 12 April, was one of the earliest Honorary Life Members of the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC). In the course of a long life dedicated to his belief in Christian principles of communication, Wim was a pioneer in many aspects of audiovisual work, loyally serving his own company, IKON, and WACC’s European Regional Association.

WACC Speaks to Europe Parliamentary Committee on Media and Gender Print E-mail

  "Combating sexist stereotypes in the media” is the subject of public hearing of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe’s Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men which takes place in Paris on 24 March 2009.

At the hearing, the findings of the 2005 Global Media Monitoring Project will be presented by Lavinia Mohr, WACC’s Director of Programmes.
